Google Gemini Adds Notebooks Feature With Automatic NotebookLM Sync for Projects

Google has rolled out a notebooks feature in the Gemini app, enabling users to organize chats, files, and custom instructions into dedicated project spaces that sync automatically with NotebookLM.

The update is currently available to Google AI Ultra, Pro, and Plus subscribers on the web. Free users and mobile access are expected to be introduced in the coming weeks, along with expansion to additional European countries.

How Gemini Notebooks Work and Sync

Notebooks serve as a persistent space within Gemini for organizing content related to a specific project or topic. Users can move existing chats into a notebook, add files such as documents and PDFs, and set custom instructions to provide Gemini with additional context for responses within that notebook.

Gemini considers the added sources along with its standard tools and web search when answering questions asked inside a notebook. The number of sources a notebook can hold depends on the user’s subscription tier.

Notebooks in Gemini sync in both directions with NotebookLM. Any source added to a Gemini notebook automatically shows up in NotebookLM, and vice versa. This makes it easy for users to access NotebookLM-specific features like Video Overviews and Infographics for material initially organized in the Gemini app, without needing to manually transfer files between the two.

How to Start Using Gemini Notebooks and Where They’re Available

The notebooks panel can be accessed from the side panel of the Gemini web app. Clicking the “New notebook’ button creates a new project space. You can move previous conversations into notebooks after they are created.

Notebooks are now available for Google AI Ultra, Pro, and Plus subscribers through the Gemini web app. Google has not provided specific dates for when the free tier will be rolled out, for mobile access, or for the European expansion. The company only stated that these features should be arriving in the coming weeks.
