Instagram has introduced a new feature that allows users to edit comments, a capability they have been requesting for years. The option becomes available immediately after posting a comment, but only for 15 minutes.
After that period, the comment can no longer be edited. Instagram confirmed the addition of this feature through posts on Threads and in a statement to Social Media Today.
How Instagram Comment Editing Works and Its Limitations
Comments can be edited multiple times within 15 minutes of posting. While text content can be changed, images included in comments cannot be modified. After 15 minutes, comments become locked, preventing further edits.
When a comment is edited, other users will see an indicator showing it was changed. The version history is not available, so users cannot view what the original comment said before editing.
The 15-minute limit starts from the time the comment is posted, not from the last edit. Images embedded in comments are entirely excluded from the editing window. It is unclear whether Instagram might extend this time limit in future updates.
Some users have criticized the absence of a visible version history, arguing that it allows for changing the tone or meaning of a comment after others have replied. Instagram has not directly addressed these concerns in its official statement.
